The University of Idaho is offering a fully funded MS Graduate Research Assistantship in Animal, Veterinary, and Food Sciences for 2026. The position is part of a grant-funded research project and is based at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension, and Education Center (NMCREEC) near Salmon, Idaho. The research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of virtual fencing for cattle in large, rugged rangeland environments.

Eligibility Requirements

Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (completed within 3 months of start date)

Strong communication and leadership skills

Valid driver’s license and willingness to work in remote and rugged conditions

Preferred qualifications:

Experience with vegetation monitoring, livestock handling, agricultural technologies, GIS tools (ArcGIS/onX)

Previous involvement in research publications, grant writing, or public presentations

Familiarity with rural living, ATV/UTV and 4WD operation, and towing trailers

Responsibilities

Conduct research on virtual fencing containment and cattle behavior

Collect data on grazing patterns, vegetation, and movement metrics

Contribute to broader research goals in post-wildfire and invasive plant management zones
