US postal service will not increase the stamp prices in January

Direct mail advertisers and non-profit organizations welcome the decision of the Postal Service of the United States on Wednesday to not increase the stamp prices in January, so that a series of two annual price increases are broken.

The postal service has announced that it will not change the price of first-class e-mail at the beginning of 2026. In July the office raised the stamp prices to 78 cents of 73 cents. In the past five years, first-class postal and marketing prices have risen by more than 50%, while the magazines have risen by 67%.

New Postmaster General David Steiner made the decision not to increase the prices for Monopoly Mail products, which was approved by the board of directors of the organization. Large mailers insisted on Steiner when he took office last summer to regularly increase the stamp prices, and said that direct mail became unaffordable for some companies and harming USPS income.

“We are constantly striving to balance our price approach, both to meet the turnover needs of the postal service and to deliver affordable offers that reflect the market conditions,” Steiner said in a press release. “We have therefore decided to refrain from a price change for first -class post pans and other market -dominant services until the mid -year 2026.”

Under an inflation -based formula approved by the Postal Rate Commission, the postal service had the authority to increase the stamp prices in January by 1.3%.

“We appreciate the common sense that is followed by Postmaster-General David Steiner, who will help the agency to maintain a post volume that has been poorly required in recent years. The USPS is a network that depends on a critical volume of mass to finance its fixed costs. Although the degree of tariff will not solve all problems. Statement.

The postal service lost $ 9.5 billion last year and was on its way to lose around $ 7 billion for the tax year ending on September 30.

The USPS started the practice of increasing prices every six months after the Postal Regulatory Commission at the end of 2020 granted the supra-inflation authority of the agency. Earlier this year, at the insistence of the Alliance of Non -Profit Mailers and other groups, the PRC started a revision of its administrative decision to allow the extra rate authority. It is considered whether the price increases should be limited once a year.

Mailers say that the half -yearly tariff increases are very disturbing and expensive for the post industry, tariff paying mailers, the USPS and regulators.
