University of Glasgow Scholarships 2027: Global Leadership and GREAT Explained

Last verified: 12 October 2026. We checked these University of Glasgow scholarships against the university’s official pages.

The university has now listed its scholarships for 2027/28 entry, and two of them matter most to international Masters applicants: the Global Leadership Scholarship and the GREAT Scholarships 2027. Both are worth £10,000 (ten thousand pounds) off tuition. However, they work very differently, so this guide explains who qualifies, when to apply and how much you would still pay.

Global Leadership Scholarship: the main University of Glasgow scholarship for Africa and Asia

For most readers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Liberia and Bangladesh, this is the realistic option. All of these countries appear on the official eligible list.

Eligibility checklist

  • You need grades equivalent to a UK First Class Honours degree.
  • You must hold an offer for a full-time, 1-year Masters starting September 2027.
  • You must be classed as International or EU for fee purposes.
  • Also note that diplomas and certificates do not qualify. Only in-person, 1-year Masters programmes count (the Book and Paper Conservation MPhil and Textile Conservation MPhil receive the discount for year one only).

Because the university decides on a rolling basis, applying early is sensible. Even so, the closing date is usually late August, and the university will confirm the exact 2027 date later.

GREAT Scholarships 2027 at Glasgow

Glasgow runs this award with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign. It is much smaller, with just three places. In addition, you must not receive any other funding, either from Glasgow or an outside body.

The university also expects successful scholars to act as ambassadors for UK higher education. For example, they should attend a networking event for GREAT scholars and share their experience of studying in the UK.

Importantly, you must have applied, accepted a place and met all offer conditions by 30 April 2027. So if you are in Pakistan or Bangladesh, plan your English test and documents early.

Worked example: what you would still pay

To make the numbers concrete, imagine Amaka from Lagos gets an offer for a one-year MSc. Suppose the programme fee were £30,000 (thirty thousand pounds). This is a hypothetical figure, so check your own programme page for the real fee.

  • Tuition fee (hypothetical): £30,000 (thirty thousand pounds)
  • Minus the Global Leadership Scholarship: £10,000 (ten thousand pounds)
  • Therefore, tuition still to pay: £20,000 (twenty thousand pounds)

On top of that, Amaka still needs living costs, the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Our UK student visa requirements guide and UK student visa financial requirements guide explain how much money you must show.

Can you combine University of Glasgow scholarships?

No, in most cases. According to the university, its discounts and scholarships cannot be combined with each other or with external partnership discounts. The only exception is the Alumni Discount. Moreover, if you receive two offers, the university deletes the lower-value award from your account.

How to apply for University of Glasgow scholarships, step by step

Applying for University of Glasgow scholarships step by step
  1. Apply for your programme first. The university says you need a submitted programme application, because you need your application number and student ID to register on the Scholarship Portal.
  2. Register your interest. Use the form on each scholarship page so the university emails you when it opens.
  3. Check the eligible programmes tab. For GREAT in particular, confirm your course is listed.
  4. Prepare your documents. Gather transcripts, your degree certificate and evidence of work experience. Then draft your statement early; our scholarship application guide can help.
  5. Pay your deposit on time. The university says you must still pay deposits in line with admissions policy while you wait for a scholarship decision.
  6. Submit before the deadline. Keep proof of submission and watch your email.

Note that you cannot defer a scholarship offer. If your plans change, you would need to reapply for the next academic year.
